Blackpool is the home of the Illuminations and over the years Blackpool Council has amassed a huge collection of related ephemera, amounting to over twenty thousand pieces! These include photographs, slides, lighting plans and a large collection of original artwork.

The collection goes back to the mid 1920s and continues to the present day. Over that time seven designers have worked on the collection, including Laurence Llewelyn–Bowen who took over in 2007.

Blackpool Council is very proud of the collection and has embarked on a new project, with the help of Heritage Lottery funding. The aim of the project is to sort through the material, catalogue it and input onto a new database, creating an archive for the future.

We will regularly load pictures from the collection onto our blog pages and they can be seen altogether on the front page.  However if you would like to see more, click on each individual image and it will open up into a new page.  That will allow you to have a closer look at the artwork plus there will be a few words from the Illuminations assistant.    So do follow our progress…..
